Reach for the Dream

Reach for the Dream

Yes, I AM Kanye West, and I am here to teach you how to Reach for the Dream (RFTD).

THIS IS AN MFS

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

IDisclaimer

Reach for the Dream is a Manual for Speed Public Service Announcement.

To Whom It May Concern, Dear Reader(s),

First of all, you may be asking yourself, “Why is MFS publishing a PSA?” Great question, here’s why—Manual for Speed is committed to raising your awareness, changing your attitudes and informing your behavior. Just think of this an exercise in philanthropy. And social engineering. Second of all, what IS Reach For The Dream? What am I about to read? Is this a contest? Are these bikes for sale? What’s happening inside this BLOG post? Is Kayne West a metaphor for God which is a metaphor for the The Quickening/The Flow/The Matrix/The Space-Time-Continuum? All great questions.

“RFTD is a celebration of Custom Everything. And an investigation into Possibility. Simply put, these bikes were made JUST TO SEE if these bikes could be made.”MFS

It happened like this: for some reason, in the spring of 2014, we (MFS) decided the world wanted (and we needed) a pair Dream Bikes for space, and for riding. Two of them. And it made sense then, as it does today, to start by contacting two exceptionally capable and talented and accomplished bike builders. A steel guy obsessed with fit and detail and a carbon fibre guy obsessed with tune and accuracy. Two builders, two different materials, for two different bikes, delivering on two different interpretations of the same premise—what does a Dream Bike look like? Especially one made for space, and for riding. Working on these bikes with Speedvagen and Argonaut, as well as Campagnolo, Fizik, Vittoria, LOOK, Chris King, ENVE, Mike Cherney, Thomas Slater and Dan Funderbrugh was so rewarding and enjoyable, we decided to encourage the Public to do the same, in the form of a Public Service Announcement Powerpoint Slideshow narrated by Kanye West.

You can look at this project in many different ways, but here are our two favorite interpretations:

  1. This is a pyramid scheme wherein we convince the world to make us (MFS) insanely ostentatious, luxurious, decadent, opulent-ass bikes, for free basically, based on our (alleged) ability to convince the world to buy their own custom shit.
  2. We just wanted to work with some of the World’s most accomplished builders, component manufacturers, designers, painters, artists and yes, jewelers, to make two of the most amazing Dream Bikes for space, and to ride, ever. Just cause. As an exercise. To see if it was possible. For your entertainment. For our entertainment. For entertainment. To support the custom community. To explore possibility. To Dream. To promote dreaming. This is about dreaming.
IIWhy Custom? - How to Build Your Dream Bike
manualforspeed_reachforthedream_presentation

Yes, I AM Kanye West, and I am here to teach you how to Reach for the Dream (RFTD). You may be thinking to yourself, “I love Kanye West, he is definitely the greatest artist to have ever walked the face of the Earth and he will surely dine with Jesus, Shakespeare, and Alexander McQueen in the garden of the gods, when and if, he ever dies. But I didn’t know he was a fan of Manual for Speed, I didn’t know that Kanye and MFS were such tight bros that Kanye West would do an animated PowerPoint presentation about exactly what it takes to dream about a dream bike, to reach for the dream about a dream bike, and to own a dream bike.” Uhhhhhhh.

  1. We are TIGHT, like balloon knot tight.
  2. Bikes are ill. Raf Simons/Helmut Lang F/W 2002 I-L-L.
  3. Kanye West knows bikes, I was up on that Brooklyn Machine Works tip back in the day.

I look around me and if I ask myself, ”Who would I ask to teach me about getting myself a dream bike?,” and the only answer I can come up with is me, so here I am. I’m not going to ask you to read this, ’cause I know you will, and I am not going to ask you to do the things I am telling you to do, ’cause I know you will, I am just going to ask you not to limit yourself, don’t skimp on your dreams man, because no matter how big you dream you can rest assured I’ve dreamed bigger, your dreams have dreams about my dreams, nah-a-mean? So go ahead play around in the field of dreams, I know the owner, he’s me.

GET YOURSELF A DREAM

First thing you need to do is identify your dream. Think hard on this one, think so hard that when you go to sleep it comes to you while you are sleeping. That’s a dream. That’s how you dream.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_ideas

A DREAM NEEDS A PLAN

Put a plan together. Figure out what goes into making your dream a reality. That dream isn’t just going to spring out of your head on its own, you’ve got to lay the groundwork son.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_dream

THE FOUR COMMANDMENTS OF BUILDING A DREAM BIKE

Don’t think of these as rules, think of them as tools; these tools will help you make sure that the your dream bike works exactly the way you want it to. The Commandments are as follows:

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_personal1

ONE: FIGURE OUT YOUR NEEDS

You have got to figure out what you want your dream bike to do. This means you need to think about how you will ride your dream bike. Are you tall, short, stocky, skinny? Do you sprint, climb, gravel grriiiiiinnd. Girl if you need that short top tube make a note.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_fit2

TWO: SIZE MATTERS

Leonardo da Vinci, another dude who has been biting my style, knew one thing: all bodies are different. Now y’all can’t all have a Kanye bod—lets take this one dream at a time—so work with what you got, consider your proportions because a dream bike, the perfect bike would exactly fit your proportions. Like a glove or my music in your ears.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_tune

THREE: TUNE MATTERS

Hey man not everyone likes the same cut of beef. I might like Ribeye, you might like Flank, I don’t know why you would but you might. Point is, just like your taste in steaks, everyone has a different taste in what they like to ride. Someone might like a stiff riding rig for hardcore sprinting just as much as somebody else needs a compliant ride for gravel griiiiiiiiiiiiiind’in. Ughhhhhhhh.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_style

FOUR: STYLE MATTERS

I can’t even be bothered.

DREAMS AREN’T PREFABRICATED

You’ve figured out that there is a bunch of important personal shit that matters when creating your dream bike, but now comes the fun part: $$$ spending that money $$$. Cause dreams may be free if you can pay the sandman, but making your dreams a reality is gonna cost you. So you’re gonna go to a store, along with all these other half-ass dreamers? I thought you had a dream. I thought you wanted that dream son! Well, there are a couple problems with prefabricated dreams:

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_fit

FIRST PROBLEM: ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL

One size doesn’t fit all, and six sizes fit six bodies, feel me?, on these pre-made jams you fit your body to the bike, the bike doesn’t fit to your body. Remember da Vinci?, that’s whats up.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_tune2

SECOND PROBLEM: YOU’VE GOT NO ROOM FOR OUT OF TUNE

Nothing worse than having one of your backing band players playing an instrument that is out of tune, that’s not my tempo, it just throws off your whole shit. And that’s exactly what it’s like to ride a bike that isn’t tuned to you. You just can’t ride the thing right.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_style2

THIRD PROBLEM: NO STYLE, NO PERSONALITY

This is a style thing. Hey if you’re interested in a bike that looks like everyone’s else, that’s on you. Go ahead and fall in line boy, punch that clock, and turn that same tired trick you’ve been turning for days. All I’m saying is that your dreams shouldn’t be someone else’s, you need your own flash, and you’re not going to find it on some standard, cookie cutter, printed at the factory bike, nah that’s not style.

manualforspeed_reachforthedream_expert

THE SOLUTION? YOU HAVE TO GO CUSTOM!!!!

Truth. You want a dream bike? Then you need a custom bike. Here’s the low. If you’re going to go out and spend 7, 8, 9, 10 grand on a bike it might as well be the bike of your dreams, right? Well Kanye, Manual for Speed, and the crews from Argonaut Cycles and the Vanilla Workshop rapped about this. True, there are lot of companies out that offer perfectly fine, standard sized, standard tuned, standard style ten thousand dollar bikes. Yeah, they may seem nice, but think about this, Kanye is going to tell how it is. For the same amount of money you could get with your favorite custom builder, and get the bike of your dreams. Its going to fit right, ride right, and have your sense of style. Plus its going to have the same flash parts that the ten grand cookie cutter rig has, duh right? You ain’t stupid.

IT’S GOING TO COST YOU, BUT IT’S OH-SO-WORTH IT

Hey so you need to tell your girl or your guy or your self that you’re going custom. If you need helps I wrote you a top ten list of reasons that you need your dream bike.

  1. Kanye said so.
  2. Kanye said so.

“I wanted an optical gradient effect and have been playing around with Arabic and Islamic tessellation. Various Op Art and Escher's 'Metamorphosis' are probably influences as well. The hexagonal repeat is one of the three standard geometric tessellations, but in my opinion the most handsome. It's often found in Middle Eastern architecture.”Dan Funderburgh

CHERN Jewelry = Mike Cherney = Magic. If left to his own devices Mike would be satisfied to work on his own projects, tend to his garden, and explore in and around the Mythical State of Jefferson. But we won’t leave Mike to his own devices. He is magic and that, by all accounts, makes him a wizard and Manual for Speed knows to hang on to a wizard. We know that Mike knows how to reach for the dream, a dream that is in all likelihood more magnificent, wondrous, and unfathomable than mere mortals are capable of. That’s why these special pieces of bike jewelry warrant a disclaimer: we, MFS, understand that uber expensive bike jewelry isn’t for everyone, in fact we don’t even expect you or anyone else to buy it. That said, we don’t expect you not to buy it either, if for no other reason than that it was made by a jewelry wizard and your bike probably deserves some wizard made jewels. These stem caps and barend plugs are made from Silver, Copper, and New Gold, and they are UH-MAZE-ING. If you are interested in Mike’s work, send him an electronic email, chern@sonic.net

Adam and Ugo from Fizik pulled from a private vault of experimental leather to create a series of very limited saddles. How do they do it, what’s their process, what did they eat, where did they sleep, what mattress/pillow/comforter did they use to dream up these babies? The world may never know. What we do know is these tush lounges are a derrière’s dream come true.
