Description

“The Tour of Utah returns to Park City on Sunday, August 12 for the sixth and final stage marking the first time the race’s overall finish has been hosted by Park City. This route features 76.7 miles (123.4km) and close to 6,900 feet of climbing. The route passes through the private Wolf Creek Ranch with its 2.15-mile climb among aspen trees that reaches a maximum pitch of 22 percent. The second KOM is located at Empire Pass, a six-mile climb with sections that surpass a 20-percent gradient that will be used for the first time. A downhill approach into historic Park City should entertain crowds with a blazing finish on lower Main Street in front of the Kimball Arts Center.”–CyclingNews

IAltitude Is Evil

MFS asked noted Team Exergy rider and professional cyclist (that means he’s in good shape) Morgan Schmitt to distill his thoughts about the 2012 Tour of Utah. We did not specify in how many words he was to do so, and he chose to speak to the point quickly.

“This race is very hard. Period. They dubbed it the hardest race in America, and it's certainly living up to that name. Altitude is evil. It's especially hard to deal with when you're not prepared for it, mentally or physically. In some ways that's the reason for coming here; after this we head to Durango for the USA Pro Challenge. It's a double-edged sword, though. A race like this could prepare you well for what's next, or you could just dig yourself into a big hole.”Morgan Schmitt
